Why I Chose to Major in Computer Information Systems? – Tyler Philie

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Tyler Philie. I’m a Senior at Wentworth Institute of Technology studying Computer Information Systems. I’m also a musician! I play guitar and sing. I play in a few bands that travel up and down the East Coast performing.

What got you interested in Computer Information Systems?

I actually chose Computer Information Systems on a complete whim. I originally applied for Computer Engineering and was told that I didn’t have the math requirements to get accepted. Because of that, I picked the next alphabetical computer major, which happened to be Computer Information Systems. After two weeks, I realized that this was definitely the program for me.

What advice would you give to students looking to major in Computer Information Systems?

It is important to understand the importance of this major. With such an influx in these STEM careers, there will be a greater number of people entering the job market, with a smaller number of people capable of managing them. Computer Information Systems teaches you how to walk the walk AND talk the talk. It puts you at such a massive advantage over these individuals who just studied their field of choice because we are exposed to such a vast amount of information. It is our job to go beyond scratching the surface if we find something interesting. You really do get out of it what you put into it.

This Fall, you rolled out data management technology for a non-profit, how was that experience?

I had such an excellent time at Better Community Living (BCL). The best part of my day was always going and visiting the staff and the individuals. By the end of the internship, I would spend my whole day with the staff making sure that everything was going according to plan regarding their data collection. This meant I got to spend my whole day with the individuals there, which is such a wonderful experience. I have learned the most about communicating and interacting with people from my time with these individuals. I have nothing but nice things to say about BCL.

Where do you see yourself in 1-2 years?

In 1-2 years, I hope to see myself working at a smaller company, leading people  preferably in a project management position. I want to work at a smaller company so I can really get to know the people I’m working with and be able to work alongside them rather than above them.

Any advice for students looking for a co-op/internship, especially for Computer Information Systems majors?

Apply everywhere! Keep applying! I easily sent out 40 applications to various companies in one co-op semester. Apply to the position you want to work at, not just the position you are qualified for. You have skills! By the time you’re looking for an internship, you have enough skills to demonstrate your worth. The whole point of an internship is to learn, you’re not supposed to be a wholly qualified candidate, because if you were, you wouldn’t be looking for an internship. Keep that in mind while you’re sending off application after application!

What are you passionate about?

Music and movies! Anything creative, really. I’m all for someone expressing themselves through art, especially when it’s something everyone can enjoy.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Boston?

As a commuter, I often don’t have time to sit down and enjoy a meal because I’m always on the run. This means I turn to food trucks more often than not. My favorite food truck is Moyzilla however, nothing beats their dumplings!
